A total of nine Hong Kong films with gambling themes were selected for analysis. The criteria for selection of the films were as follows: the movies in which the protagonists are portrayed by well known Hong Kong actors that attracted a wide spectrum of the audience in the community.

Out of such criteria, six male actors, each representing a legend at their times, were selected in the current analysis. Psychological analysis of the characters portrayed in the Hong Kong movies suggests a shift of the emphasis from the moral integrity and social responsibility to the individual pursuit of monetary gains as the dominant theme of the movie and a component of the characterization of the protagonists.

Further, the particular cultural and social conditions of Hong Kong society in each decade may have significant bearings on cultural characterization of male heroes. We argue that the male characterization of gamblers in the Hong Kong movies might as well be a crystallization of public fantasies and wishes. Keywords Characterization of gamblers in movies. Hong Kong movies. Portrayal of gamblers in media A surge of research interest on culture and gambling has gained momentum unabated.

In the past 30 years, gambling has become widely available as a form of entertainment and a key feature of international tourism in many parts of the world. With rapid globalization, unprecedented numbers of people cross borders at ease and as consequence demographics of industrialized countries have increasingly become diverse.

In this context, it is not surprising that the issues of cultural influence on all aspects of human behavior, including gambling, has been under increased scrutiny. Although empirical research on the cultural influence on gambling behaviour is still scarce e. Chan : K. Another line of research also links gambling to adjustment stress, unavailability of other types of leisure activities and various types of erroneous cognition regarding odds of winning e.

The study of popular culture has attracted much attention from scholars and researchers in anthropology e. Popular culture, by definition, reflects the values and beliefs, likes and dislikes and the norms and taboos of a given society Strinati Therefore, the popular culture serves as a mirror of the history and the life of a community as it gives a collective expression to the general culture of the community.

Examples of such expression can be seen in the choices of consumer goods and services, popular entertainment such as movies, music, novels, mass media, leisure pursuits and cultural activities. Popular culture is not just a mirror of our reality but essential ingredients that make up our reality Strinati Postmodernists go even further to assert that popular cultural signs and media images dominate our sense of reality to the extent that the demarcation between the style and the substance has been eroded.

In many art forms, including films, television programs, and comics books, the style or surface form is often more important than the basic substance. Among media, movies can best illustrate the substance of popular culture as they transcend time and space and reflect and preserve valuable information of the cultural representation of a society. He argues that the Hollywood movies reflect much of the dream and social fantasies of the American society, which he calls the American dream.

Its main proposition is that material wealth and success in life can be achieved by anyone who has the necessary initiation, ingenuity, perseverance, and commitment.

The pursuit of such an American dream focuses on the characterization of the hero or heroine who would struggle to overcome adversities, conquer the villains against all odds and establish the law and order in the story.

The archetypical individual hero has an irresistible appeal within the Western culture. James Bond , portrayed by Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan, pitches a lonely battle against an abominable nemesis and survives against all odds for the British intelligence service MI6. The James Bond series is the longest running and most financially successful movie franchise to date. Although Strinati presents convincing analysis of the American films, it remains to be seen if his incisive analysis would be equally effective for non-American films.

How would other cultures accommodate the traditional American characterization of indepen- dence, perseverance, brevity and personal agency and endeavor in the movies? Also, the study does not analyze the main protagonists individually from a psychological perspective.

Due to globalization, the regional influences, which had been developed earlier partially due to geographical segregation, have become popular in the mainstream movie industry. Although comparable to the American movie industry for its size, Indian movie industry was little known outside the South Asian continent. However, stylistics of the foreign movie has become a staple for the mainstream American and European movies.

For example, movie directors such as Quentin Tarrantino and Ahn Lee have contributed bring the influence of Asian movies to the mainstream Hollywood production e. A psychological study of the characterization of gamblers portrayed in the movie has been put forward by Mark Griffiths He dissects the film, The Gambler, from a psychological perspective. Griffiths has demonstrated that the main character shows many signs of pathological gambling as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th ed.

In the film, the gambler, the protagonist is totally preoccupied with gambling, chases losses, and endures social and personal difficulties due to his gambling. Despite his repeated frustration and humiliation as a consequence of his gambling habits, the protagonist takes pride or even enjoys the life of a pathological gambler.

Such unconscious wish to lose might well be a manifestation of a self-hatred and guilt. Griffiths proposes to investigate the movie from a psychodynamic perspective which defines problem gambling as the consequence of childhood fixation and the resultant maladaptive coping.

Childhood experience forms a deep-rooted sense of inadequacy and inferiority in the unconsciousness of the person. Aasved ; Rosenthal The basic argument is that gambling is a product of fixation of the anal stage. Children derive autoerotic pleasure from urination and defecation by holding their urine and feces and delay elimination to achieve urethral—and anal-erotic pleasure.

Thus, gambling with its emphasis on money is only an extension of such anal pleasure when the child reaches adulthood. As a psychoanalyst, Bergler analyzed clinical cases of his patients.

In his book, The Psychology of Gambling , he chronicles the treatment of 60 patients and employs the traditional psychoanalytic techniques as his main treatment methodology. In his analysis, gamblers play not to win but to lose. Such unconscious desires stem from the deep-rooted guilt arising from the earlier fixation in oral and anal stage. According to Bergler, the conflict is the aggressive urges towards the parent, i.

A psychodynamic approach is often criticized if the context in which Freudian theory was formulated is vastly different from the permissive society in the 21st Century industrialized democracies.

To date, only a few studies have concerned on how gamblers are portrayed in movies within a specific cultural perspective e. Ohtsuka and Chan have analyzed the characterization of female gamblers in movies in Hong Kong.

The authors have argued that social and cultural factors have been crucial factors in the development of female movie characters in the gambling movies. In the gambling movies, female gamblers are portrayed with a negative light and marginalized.

The present study employs a similar methodology to the earlier work by Chan and Ohtsuka This article attempts to address the cultural issues and factors in the psychological portrayal of the male gamblers in movies. It would focus how cultural changes in Hong Kong in the last 50 years shape the perception of gambling in popular media and the portrayal of male gamblers. The purposes of the current study are: a To analyze how the male protagonist is construed and portrayed in movies with gambling themes in Hong Kong, b To understand how the characterization of the main character corresponds to the beliefs, attitudes and issues of the era when the movies were made, and c To relate and possibly explain how the changes in the characterization of the main characters or heroes during the period.

Method The second author watched the majority of movies with gambling themes produced in Hong Kong in the last 50 years. At least one movie in each decade of the last 50 years is selected. They would independently assess each movie. The first group consisted of one person only. He is a locally acclaimed television producer who has directed more than sixty programs on contemporary issues and topics.

The second group was composed of five college students, who are movie enthusiasts. They would discuss on the movies and come to a rating and evaluation to each movie. At the beginning of each testing session, the first author of this study would inform each rater about the purposes and direction of the study.

Then, the raters would assess the content and the story plot, the characteristics of the hero, the theme and the genre, and the outcome of the movie. They would make their assessment independently and present their opinions on the movies on these dimensions. Inter-rater reliability was computed as a means to assess the reliability of the ratings of the two groups. It was defined as the correlation of ratings on the major findings of this study. Hypotheses This study intends to test the following hypotheses: a There are significant differences in the psychological portrayal of the heroes in the movies produced in different eras in Hong Kong.

The couple live with his parents who always give them a hard time. Family disputes in a multigenerational household are common. After being laid off, Leung Kwong starts to gamble and soon he finds himself as the cause of family disputes. In a typical Hong Kong movie slap-stick comedy, he ends up with a major misunderstanding with his wife that almost costs his marriage. Nevertheless, after a false start, Leung Kwong reconciles with his wife and quits gambling but his sister-in-law continues to gamble and loses everything.

The moral of this movie is simple: people should not gamble as it is a vice and immoral. All gamblers portrayed in this movie bring disgrace and misfortunes to themselves and their families. This view reflects the cultural stigma on gambling as a social vice prevalent in s. The majority of the new immigrants lived in wood huts with no electricity or sewage.

Leung Kwong perhaps portrays the stereotypical Hong Kong resident of the times: hardworking, duty-bound, and faithful to family and friends and, most importantly, endures the hardship with grace and honour.

Hong Kong has evolved from a small coastal city in South East China to a developing industrial city and an emerging world business centre. The modernization of the city comes with challenges to the traditional cultural values and concerns. The traditional family values with the emphasis of filial piety, hard work and social righteousness have been replaced with the promises of individual advancement and the pursuit of material wealth.

The typical size of Hong Kong family becomes smaller and the traditional Chinese values of self-control and personal integrity are giving way to the utilitarian concerns of pursuit of material wealth. The actor, Michael Hui portrays a small time city slicker, Wen. Wen is a repeat offender who is always busy making a quick buck through gambling. A novice gambler, Chieh portrayed by Samuel Hui , gets into trouble when he tries to steal casino chips from a crooked card dealer Dean Shek.

Whilst in jail, Chieh meets Wen who agrees to become his mentor. The two schemers design an ingenious plan to cheat on gambling.

The literature on individual costs of pathological gambling considers consequences for the gambler and those with whom the proogram has most frequent interactions, including family, friends, and close associates. Blaszczynski and Silove noted that criminal behaviors among adolescent gamblers may be more prevalent than among adult gamblers, in part because youths have few options for obtaining funds and greater susceptibility to social pressure among gambling peers.
