By George Martin For Mailonline. A gambling addict known as 'The Angry Indian' said he 'was not in this world' when he stabbed his wife to death after they argued about the money he frittered away at the bookies. Jalal Uddin, 47, 'cut, stabbed, slashed or chopped at' year-old Asma Begum's head, face, neck and back around 60 times at their flat in City Island Way, Canning Town.

Indian restaurant chef Uddin had regular shouting matches about money with the victim and she told a housing officer he hit her when she refused to hand over cash. A sketch of Jalal Uddin at the Old Bailey, London where he is currently on trial for the murder of his wife. She said her husband 'always wanted money' but the little she had was meant 'to pay the bills and feed and clothe the family'. Uddin was known as 'The Angry Indian' at his local bookmakers because he would often punch gambling machines when he lost.

But after withdrawing the cash Uddin 'went straight next door to the betting shop', the court has heard. William Hill's records did not show whether Uddin won or lost money during his first half an hour inside. Uddin said his wife was in the kitchen using a knife and they began swearing at eachother.

We were arguing about the money,' he said, speaking through a Bengal interpreter. Uddin said he was wounded in the hand and leg but grabbed the knife from his wife as they struggled on the floor. When I saw the blood I lost it. I thought she was going to kill me. I was not in this world at that time.. Uddin said he could not remember exactly what happened then or how his t-shirt got in the bath after he killed his wife.

He left the flat with a bag containing his travel documents and went to a friend's house but said he could not remember why. The following day Mrs Begum's brother got a call from Uddin's brother in Bangladesh urging him to check on the couple because they were 'fighting and screaming at each other'.

Her nephew, who was also worried by similar calls, went to the flat where he found Mrs Begum lying dead on the kitchen floor, jurors were told. There were so many cuts to her face that an experienced pathologist who examined her body was unable to count them all and her left hand was almost amputated at the wrist.

Such was the ferocity of the attack that a piece of the knife blade had broken off in her face. Share this article Share.
